Artists to have Short North store for holidays

Columbus-A wide range of activities— from Comfest to Lesbian and Gay Pride Week to the Fourth of July and Gallery Hop-have inspired a Cape Cod artists' group to open a temporary storefront in

Phyllis Hartley and P.J. McKey, right.

Columbus' Short North Art District. According to artist P.J. McKey, "The events in Columbus in late June and early July make kindred spirits of the most un-

likely people, and our art is perfect for the location."

Art and Furniture Unlimited is a Cape Cod collaboration of art and theater that encompasses the practical and foolish, the recycled and the priceless.

It was the theater that brought together McKey and her life partner Phyllis Hartley. The two met while working on a set at Cape Cod's Backroom Theater in Hyannis, Mass. for playwright Edward Gorey.

While working together, they discovered they had a shared interest in breathing new life into old discarded items by reincarnating them into the improbably functional. Their specialty is one-of-a-kind objects forged of humor, style and contradiction. They have received considerable notice for their imaginative "high heels" series. A pair of heels transformed into bookends was recently donated to the Homeless Families Auction at the Roy G. Biv Gallery.

McKey received a B.A. in theater from Smith College and graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a masters degree in directing with additional emphasis in lighting design.

Hartley has a bachelor of fine arts in painting from the University of Massachusetts.
